Do you Goodreads? Join and find me!

Considering how much I read, I am shocked that I have not talked more about where I post about books I've read, and list the books I want to read. I am always happy to learn more about what others are reading and of course share my thoughts on what I have read. I find bookshelves to be very interesting (and revealing!) Goodreads is a site for readers to review books, get recommendations, talk about books with others who are interested. You can see what your friends are reading and what they want to read. The fact that I have two boys who are 6 years apart who are evolving different reading tastes from me and each other means that I am always looking out for good material!  Goodreads also has an author program so authors can promote their books and reach their target audience as well as a writing section to get feedback on your writing, from those people, you know, who actually read and buy books. For comparison of the scale of the Goodreads membership and engagement, t

5 Things Women Should Stop Doing Now.

There have been many articles about things women do,  and what women should just stop doing, including articles about the “stop” list! I was compelled to add my 5 things because I’ve been frustrated by what I saw in my professional life and most recently, my personal life. # 1 Stop with the big explanations. Very often I saw women lead with a discussion of their rationale for some decision rather than focusing on the decision itself.  There seemed to be an innate need to justify the reasoning behind any decision even explaining why one day is better for the movies! Better:  State the decision, explain more only if asked. It is ok not to explain. If you choose to explain, be concise and factual about the reasons why. The end. Just try it. Frankly I found this approach gave others confidence in what I was saying, always helpful in a professional context. #2 Stop apologizing. This was number 1 on most of the “stop” lists. In my professional life I saw that constantly. Women ap

My boys through the years: 2016 Edition

I entertained myself by reading my prior post on the various weapons my boys have grown up with at  Boys, toys, Nerf wars .  I'm including the photos here for convenience, but you should go back and read the original post with the scintillating commentary! 5 years later, my boys have continued to play with Nerf guns, even though video games has a strong, strong pull for them, but I thought I would update the list of toys in our household in case you find yourself with a boy and was wondering what they get up to. This is what mine get up to, the older pictures and progression are below. The new stuff!!  Presenting the Rhino Fire! Check out the video here of what this baby can do! I didn't take pictures but we also have the Hail Fire! Parents of teenage boys, take heart, my teenage son has found something that can occupy his time that is NOT video games! I introduce you to Magic: The Gathering ! And I thought the rules for Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! were complicate

Where are you from?

Steelband - T&T Toursim website Carnival -  T&T Tourism website I get asked this almost every time I meet someone new. The answer, like the question, is not as straightforward as it seems. When I get asked this question, the person is usually asking more than where I am from. They usually want to know about my ethnicity and heritage, in addition to where I was born. Why I speak the way I do, and in some cases, am I American/am I here legally? For my friends, old and new who only have part of the answer,  I'll try to answer the questions implicit in "Where are you from?" more completely.  I've included a few photos from the T&T Tourism board website to give you a flavour of where I am from. Cricket - T&T Tourism website Pigeon Point, Tobago - T&T Tourism website Where were you born? I was born in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies (specifically Trinidad) and lived there until I was an adult,

Strike Back. Fun Post!

Strike Back - Where to find it: Strike Back. Never heard of it? You have no idea what you are missing. Stop reading and get it now from the iTunes store or Amazon.com . What are you waiting on? More information? Ok, I'll oblige, but first a preamble. Strike Back - The Premise and Action: I discovered Strike Back towards the end of last year, a series put on by Cinemax . It is about Section 20 - a secret unit of the British military intelligence, whose team of special operations personnel conduct high-risk missions around the world. There is non-stop action, explosions, fighting, sex and profanity. It is just awesome! The cast did a lot of special training and can actually handle the weapons they shoot, and Winchester and Stapleton, the two leads, did a lot of their own (dangerous) stunts on the show. Not convinced? Here are a few teasers about the action: Strike Back - How to Blow up Actors Strike Back - How to Dangle from a Helicopter Strike Back - How to Driv
