The manny

Soo..., after having our after-school sitter for our boys for a bit, her schedule changed and we had to find someone else. We decided to go with a manny (male nanny), because for one thing we had a manny apply! While he was not able to stay with us long unfortunately, it was a very interesting experiment! The dynamic between the boys and our manny was different than between them and our female sitters. For one thing, the play time was much more rough and tumble. More fighting and wrestling, jumping and punching. When they were not fighting with him, he was less likely to intervene if they were roughhousing with each other. The female sitters would have stepped in much earlier. You may see this dynamic in your own household when Dad is in charge vs Mom or if parents have two different parenting styles. They also interacted with him differently - they saw him more like a buddy rather than someone they had to listen to and respect, so that made his job a wee bit challenging. He had...

Where has my sweet baby gone?

That would be Lucas. He recently told me that they discussed bullying in school, so if I was in any doubt that he was moving into a new phase of life, this confirmed it. He is moving into the 8-12 yr phase where bullying and such things occur (and this precedes the teen-adolescent phase). Lucas doesn't want to go to the ladies' bathroom with me anymore, so as he becomes more independent we've had to have the "good touch/bad touch" discussion. This is still ongoing (' The Right Touch ', ' It's My Body '). I had only recently restarted reading parenting books after a fairly long hiatus (I just finished ' Raising Cain ' and ' The Trouble With Boys ' before that). They discuss many factors affecting boys, and while the father is by no means the only important element in raising boys, it is a significant one. In their book 'Raising Cain', the authors say, " It is clear to us that the most emotionally resourceful a...

Raising Boys

I recently listened to Raising Boys by John Eldredge (Ransomed Heart Ministries). What John talks about with the others on the cd are what they have done/are doing to be deliberate in helping their sons negotiate their path from boys to men and everything that comes in-between. If you have sons I would recommend you take a listen. Having said that, I'll give you fair warning: It is Christian-based but the Bible does not form a large part of the discussion They talk about boys learning to be men from other men. Not women. The behaviours described are what you would typically hear associated with boys (climbing, fishing, guns, big machinery, danger) Even if this may not be quite what you would expect to get insights from, you, like me, may still find the key points valuable. I've put what I like at the end of this post. My boys do act like they discuss on the cd. I remember one breakfast morning, Lucas ate around his buttered toast into a shape of a gun. He was 3 if so...
