Since we don't do this very often (once a year), I thought I'd share my most recent experience going to a Christmas party at a friend's house.Get dinner ready for kids.
Pyjamas laid out? Check.
Instructions for babysitter? Check.
Phone numbers by phone? Check.
Ok, enough time for a super quick shower. Please, please don't let Liam want to come in the shower with me.
What's the time?
Geez, ok, I'll wear that skirt and top, and hope nobody remembers it.
Good grief, this skirt is too tight, why didn't I try it on earlier? (Much wiggling going on.)
Ok, if I wear the top over it, nobody will see the skirt way, way up on my torso - the only place it'll fit.
Is the babysitter here yet?
In the middle of dressing, to Liam: "Yes baby what are you playing? Are you and Lucas scouting for Miss Sharon? Ok, go back to the door and scout." Ok, got them out of the bathroom for a few minutes to finish dress.
Ok, must put on makeup now. Let's see, what's in the cosmetic bag? Mascara? Ok, I'll put that on. Eyeliner? Ok, check. Lipstick? Ok, what colour is that? Scratch that, it doesn't matter!
Ok, no time to style hair, put it up in a pony tail, with a nice clip. Ok, hair done.
Oh, oh, where are my earrings?
What's the time?
Ok, ok, no time to fiddle with earrings. Ummm, ok, I'll wear my hair down and cover my ears. Ok, earring problem solved.
Leave bathroom to get my shoes, but have to come back in. Perfume, perfume, must smell good.
Where are my shoes? Hold them against me.
Well, they don't actually match very well with my clothes..well it's too late now to change either clothes or shoes. Besides, I love these shoes and I'll wear them no matter what.
Ok, babysitter is here! (Lots of screaming as the kids are excited to see Miss Sharon.)
Quick summary of instructions to Miss Sharon.
Say good-bye to the kids.
Put one foot in one shoe, Liam comes crying to me..."Mama.." Pick him up, dressed-up and all, limping with one foot in shoe, to take him back to the living room.
What's the time? We'll just go when we go and reach when we reach.
Miss Sharon: "Do you want to make big bubbles?"
Liam: "Yes, big bubbles." Liam wants down and runs off.
Masterful touch by our awesome babysitter.
Escape! Escape! Close the door quickly and leave.
Whew!! We made it out the door.
Had a good time, ate a little, enjoyed some eggnog.
Not accustomed to standing in heels for so long, sit down on sofa to take a rest.
Crap!! Awake with a start. Must have dozed off. Was I drooling? Snoring? Did anybody see me? No, safely hidden against my Bubby. Whew!
What's the time?
9:30 pm.

I can just feel the stress and the pressure to get out the door on time.
Thanks for sharing, you're not there on your own. :-)
