"I asked him, 'Do you want to be my friend?' And he said 'Yes' "
That's how Lucas told me he made a new friend in 2nd grade. So simple, yet indicative of Lucas as we have come to know him - outgoing, friendly, enthusiastic and brave.
Yesterday was Lucas' first day of school in his new private school. It made me realize that I don't take enough time to appreciate big son (since I am busy appreciating baby son). So this is my tribute to big son.
Although he was starting a new school, Lucas was his usual optimistic, excited self. Anxious to get to school and once there, was interested in his class, desk and what was going on. He is a marvel. I wish I could bottle whatever is in his personality that makes him so positive and enthusiastic, pretty much all the time. I certainly could use some of that tonic. I imagine what I would feel like if it was me - trepidation, intimidated..all manner of bad things.
He is so bright and colourful that I feel quite colourless compared to big son, and I wish I knew how he came out to be that way, so we could make sure 2nd son was like that too.
He recently had a down moment, "Whenever I try to help I get into trouble." He said this after trying to comfort or help Liam who got more upset and ended up hurting himself. I've heard Lucas make that statement twice now and it is two times too many, reminding me that despite the fact that he is well-adjusted, he still requires me to do my parenting best. It is because I didn't, that he made that statement.
But the good thing is, it is hard to keep him down..thank God! It gives me a chance to figure out how to be a better parent, to keep my happy, happy child...happy. In the meantime, I want to share one of the things that makes big son happy - Legos!
This was his vacation, play-by-himself Lego set, a (Star Wars) Republic Dropship with AT-OT
Walker. He built these himself with minimal help from his parents.
